🔬 Focus Areas: Hardware-based cleantech solutions (bioenergy, energy efficiency, fuel cells, carbon capture, advanced manufacturing, etc.)

The Spark Cleantech Accelerator was developed in partnership with Evergreen Climate Innovations, the University of Tennessee Research Park, and strategic collaborators like the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The program is housed at the Institute of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing in Knoxville and provides lab and office space tailored to energy startups.

Who Should Apply? Eligibility Criteria

✅ Early-Stage Companies: From idea to prototype to first customers. Startups at various stages are welcome to the Spark Cleantech Accelerator.

✅ Cleantech Focus: Strong preference for hardware solutions, though software and advanced materials may also be eligible.

✅ TRL Level: Ideal applicants are between Technology Readiness Levels 2 to 6.

✅ Environmental Impact: Technologies should improve energy efficiency, support renewable energy, or reduce GHG emissions.

✅ Team Commitment: At least one team member must participate full-time in Knoxville for the entire 12 weeks.

✅ Tennessee Ties Preferred: Applicants planning to establish a business presence in Tennessee are prioritized.

✅ IP Protection: Strong preference for startups with defensible IP, including pending or issued patents.


Spark CleanTech Investment Terms

💰 Stipend Amount: $15,000, paid in two installments. Half is provided at the beginning of the program and the other half at the midpoint, contingent on performance.

🆓 No Equity Taken: Spark does not take equity from participating companies. Founders retain full ownership.

🎯 No Direct Investment, but:

  • Exposure to TVA, ORNL, and potential pilot project partners
  • Opportunity to pitch at Demo Day to investors, corporate partners, and VCs
  • Past participants have secured millions in grant and equity funding post-program
